So addictive is Cathy’s meme that when I realised at tea and chocolate and beetroot brownie time on Sunday afternoon that I would be out all day on Monday I hastened into the garden with my scissors. There was so much to choose from but as the light was fading I cut a bit of this and a bit of that, plonked it all in a jug and set about photographing it on the kitchen table. In real life this jug of freshly picked flowers and foliage is quite pretty and perky, but under the flat LED light the vase looks, well, flat.
Enough excuses for my lamentable flower arranging here is what I picked:
Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ for its coral pink stems, Hesperantha (both coccinea and pale pink), Japanese anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’, Acidanthera (this one stem picked from the allotment this morning and its stem sealed with boiling water in the hope it will last longer than one day in a vase), Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’, Hydrangea Heinrich Seidel, chocolate Cosmos, Rosa New Dawn, Trachelospermum jasminoides, Cotoneaster, Polystichum setiferum and Parthenocissus.
Thanks to all the rain and sunshine we have had lately there is still so much flowering in the garden including roses, clematis, honeysuckle and jasmine as well as penstemon, crocosmia, salvia, fuchsia and dianthus. Add in early purple hellebores and flowers from Viburnum Bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and I don’t think I can remember a year quite like it. It is the same story at the allotment, produce just keeps on coming. I think we will remember the abundance of October 2015 for some time to come.

I’m surprised at just how much is flowering here in the UK, great that you’ve had bumper harvests, a lot of people are complaining that the harvests aren’t so good this year, you must have chosen all the right things.

The pinks and greens that you’ve chosen look lovely together, Sarah. Although I do grow flowers, I don’t grow enough of each to be able to pick without leaving gaps – something I hope to rectify next year. I think it’s been an amazing year for both flowers and veg, I’ve still got beans and courgettes fruiting while roses, scabious and verbena are flowering. It’s all that rain we’ve had, it’s perked the garden up no end.

Oh what varied abundance there is here, Sarah – and I know what you mean about it seeming an October to remember for its abundance. I know my season has been extended with the dahlias and annuals but, like you, other things are still happily blooming that might not usually be doing so. No hellebores yet – but I might go round and check just to make sure!! What are the dahlias in the vase? Isn’t it a joy to pick from such abundance? Thanks for sharing.

Hesperantha is new to me…lovely and delicate. Your arrangement looks natural, like a walk in your garden!

Although the light flattens the flowers it made a nice pattern of shadows on the table. I love the red Hesperantha (I bought as Schizostylis), and I will be planting Aciderantha for the first time this year – it looks lovely and I’m hoping it is scented. The Dahlias are beautiful as well in that dark green vase.
